 Holiday Hazards Help your pets enjoy the holidays safely by keeping them away from potential problems on these special days. ● Valentine’s Day: Many types of flowers and plants found in bouquets are harmful to pets if they are ingested. Chocolate can cause vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, seizures, hyperactivity and in severe cases, chocolate poisoning may be fatal. ● Easter: Fake grass, small toys and other plastic items, common during this celebration, can choke dogs and cats or obstruct their intestines if ingested. ● Independence Day: Fireworks scare your pets, can make them run off and may cause serious injuries if detonated near them. Many formulations are also toxic if ingested. ● Halloween: Dogs and cats attracted by candles could either burn themselves or knock the candle over, starting a fire. All forms of chocolate are toxic for dogs and cats and xylitol, a common candy sweetener, is toxic and should be kept away from your pets. ● Thanksgiving: Turkey and chicken bones splinter easily and can cause serious internal damage if swallowed. NEVER offer avian bones to your pet! Be careful with hot pots or containers animals usually get curious when they smell something cooking and if they tip them over they may get burned. ● Christmas: Plants like Christmas rose, holly, mistletoe and lilies are toxic to dogs and cats. Another dangerous items common during this season are ribbons, bubbling lights, Christmas tree water, decoration hooks, Styrofoam, ornaments, tinsel, etc. ● New Year’s: Balloons and confetti may choke animals or obstruct their intestines if swallowed. Loud noises, typical of this celebration, can frighten pets and can cause them to run off.
