| | Hamsters | | | | 5-20-08 - Article # 10 | | | | Article # 10
Hamsters are small and curious rodents that live in the wild in dry and rocky regions of Africa, Eastern Europe and China. Three different types are usually recognized: long hair, short hair and dwarf.
Hamsters as pets are best kept in plastic hamster habitats or wire hamster cages. The best bedding material is aspen, which should be 2 to 3 inches deep and completely replaced on a weekly basis.
It is very easy to feed these animals with today’s commercial foods. While these foods are nutritionally balanced, offering of fresh celery, carrots, apples or apple peels make great supplements and treats for your pet.
Fresh water should be available at all times, and the best way to provide it is through a hanging water bottle.
Hamsters are considered solitary animals and when they are adults it is better to keep them alone and, unless breeding is wanted, same sex groups are recommended when housing multiple animals.
These little rodents are primarily active at night and may travel more than 3 miles in a single evening, for this reason an exercise wheel should be provided in the cage to help them burn off their extra energy. It is also important to offer them chewing toys that help to wear down the hamster’s constantly growing incisor teeth.
