What to do when cats invade your yard. Part 2
 3-3-09 - Article # 15
Another method to deter cats from digging in unwanted areas is to use ornamental pebbles or small-gauge chicken wire buried under a light layer of dirt or mulch. The sharp pebbles and/or the rough wire will be uncomfortable to soft paws. It also may work turning on the sprinklers of the irrigation system of your home at the prime time of disturbance (usually dawn or dusk if the cat is in your property to hunt). Unfortunately, cats are excluded from the leash laws in most Metro Dade areas. There is no legal recourse for your complaint and no legal authority, which will ticket the owner or pick up the cat. The responsibility lies with the cat’s owner. Even tough it is never easy to discuss neighborhood issues diplomatically, try to avoid confrontation with your neighbor by showing your concern for the cat’s safety and well-being. Cats kept indoors are protected from the many hazards outdoor cats confront, like rabies, feline leukemia, AIDS, and other serious diseases, parasites, garbage intoxication, attacks from other animals and people, vehicle accidents, etc. Responsible cat owners will not expose their cats to the many dangers of today’s world. If you cannot establish the cat ownership the problem is indeed in your hands and assuming that you have tried the before mentioned tactics without success you may need to resort to a humane trap. Do not use any trap other than a humane cage trap. These devices are designed to lure the animal into the cage with food and to safety contain it until it can be moved to another area. To trap a stray or feral cat, bait the trap with canned cat food (the smellier the better). The Humane Society of Greater Miami will pick up an injured or sick cat if it is confined in a trap or box. There are also business which will trap and/or transport stray or feral cats. Dr. Julio A. Tejedor Miami Animal Hospital Ph: 305-443-4777
